1. The 'problems' for five year olds

The most 'problems' they experienced by working with five year olds are about writing and lateralization. Besides that one of the experts said that these kids are most of the time very anxious. This because of the pressure of the outside world, what is giving them a lot of extra stress.

2. Body control

Before a child can work on their motorial skills, they have to get the know their body and learn to control it. They first have to practice big movements, like jumping, running, ... By doing these activities they start with something more easy, so they feel more confident because they succeeded. Step by step they can be challenged with more difficult exercises, so they have to make small movements. During this proces they learn how to use the hand separately from the arm and later the fingers separately from the hand. If they experience this proces during a fun exercise, they don'r really realize the difficulty of the movements.

3. Lateralization

Lateralization means that they are able to use both hands or both feet at the same time, but also separately. Both sides of the brain are working together with one dominant side. So if they choose a writing hand, that means there is one dominant side.

  • If a child can write by sitting straight and crossing the centre line the lateralization went well.
  • If a child is not sitting straight the lateralization is not yet developed.

4. Motivation

During the learning proces of children they have to be motivated, because otherwise they would no longer be interested in the situation and go against the learning proces. Motivate doesn't mean giving something material!

Giving some compliments is enough to motivate them and succeed the exercise. After they succeeded the positive feeling will be the motivation of the next exercises.

5. difficulty

To support all children there have to be different difficulties during these exercises. It's important to start with easy exercises, so that they feel good after it. If this went well, you can go to more difficult challenges. When the difficult exercise didn't went well it's better to go back to an easy one, so that they don't block during the learning proces.
